Motion Picture Review: The Spirit

In short, if I had to summarize the plot of the latest comic-based movie, The Spirit, with four letters and two punctuation marks I would say, "WHAT?!"

"What just happened?" "What is going on?" More questions than I could keep track of bounced around my head while I watched the movie from director Frank Miller. Inexplicably, cats were present in more than a handful of scenes, but it was the part of the movie that brandished a Nazi motif which really sent me to confusion. I also took issue with the mercurial tone. I still can't get a feel for it. It wasn't serious, it wasn't playful. The only word that fits from start to finish is weird.

With all this being said, I have never read the comic book off of which this story is based. Maybe more parts would have fallen into sensical place if I had some prior experience with the story. And, I thought Samuel L. Jackson was excellent as the Octopus. His performance contributed significantly to what I would call and entertaining -however strange- movie.

In summary, The Spirit was very bizarre and somewhat amusing. I recommend it if you simply want to be in a movie theater and need something to do while you are there, but not if you want to see a quality flick.

Captain Planet, he's our hero

Captain Planet, despite the cool-factor reducing effects of his green mullet, was the man. I'm shocked and distressed that he hasn't made a comeback by now in this era; an era of green. Environmentally consciousness has sprouted up in recent years, and Captain Planet is the man to push the movement to the next level. Plus, it was a downright entertaining show. Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, Heart! Go Planet!!!

Home...apparently it IS where the heart is

The preponderance of the five hours I spent in the airport yesterday I used to ponder. The preponderance of pondering pointed me precisely to one simple point: While home is great for where it is, what it has, and what it looks like, it is home because of who is there.

The feeling that accompanied the familiar sights, sounds, and smells of my house was spectacular. What a blessing it is to be somewhere comfortable and recognized. Still, the thought of the familiar sights, sounds and smells did not entreat me to wait by the overcrowded Gate 25 for three hours before boarding. They didn't motivate me to only get four hours of sleep after getting in at two o'clock in the morning. Nor did they persuade me to discard my own plans in order to accommodate new ones. All of this I did to spend more time with the people I love; the people that make home home.

So the sadness that hung over me yesterday as I waited to leave home did not manifest itself because I was going to miss the sight of our kitchen, it was there because I knew I already missed all of the people I was leaving at home.

Kid Cudi: Adult-sized Quality

Peer along the multicolored back cover of Kanye's emotionally candid offering 808s and Heartbreak and the first thing you will say is, "How can they expect people to read this tiny font?" Frankly, I don't have an answer to that one. Then, you will notice that only four artists are featured on the entire album: Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi, and Mr. Hudson. You will say that's sweet that Kanye teamed up with two superstars like Jeezy and Wayne, but who in the name of Dwele (featured on Graduation's "Flashing Lights") are Kid Cudi and Mr. Hudson???

Kid Cudi is an up-and-coming rapper from Cleveland who is featured on the second song of 808s and Heartbreak, "Welcome to Heartbreak," but -as Billy Mays puts it- there's more! He is also a purveyor of a freshness in rap that is overdue. With Kanye on indefinite leave from rap while on his sing-songy grind, we need someone else to fill his spot on the team of rappers that are a departure from stale, uncreative, one-dimensional rap on "monkey in a toolbox beats." Kid Cudi might be the one to fill the spot, I'm not sure yet, but maybe. He is certainly worth a listen. Go to his website www.kidcudi.com to download his 17 song mixtape. "Day N Nite" is currently my fav.

As for Mr. Hudson, I really don't know... Is he that guy on "Paranoid?" Did they name a river in New York after him? Did he do the voice of Skye on the old TV show "The Puzzle Place?" Your guess is as good as mine, this post was about Kid Cudi.

Happy Thanksgiving- I should check my mail more

Two days ago (December 10th) I went to my mailbox for the first time in quite a while...

---sidenote: okay it wasn't exactly the first time in a while because I went the night before, but couldn't remember my combo. So to be excruciatingly honest, three days ago was the first time in a long time---

..and left with a card. I love receiving parcels in the mail, as most do, but I generally only check my mailbox if I am expecting something from someone. To make a short story as short as it should be, the card was a Thanksgiving card from a few weeks ago and I felt bad for not responding. The funny part was in the card it said, "Christmas will come up faster than you know," and the writer didn't know how right on they were going to be!

---other sidenote: Thanks very much to the person who sent the card! I still feel bad that I opened it so late.---
---other other sidenote: Aren't mail stories sooooo exciting?---
